So I've been listening to "Maybe" from the 30th Anniversary CD, and I must say that in the first half, Marissa sounds really...odd. I don't know why she sang like that, but she was really nasally and maybe trying to sound younger, but by the second half of the song she sounded more normal. I LOVE her voice, but does anyone know why in that particular recording she resembled, to quote someone on iTunes, like one of the 3 chipmunks?
don't get me wrong, I LOVE her, she's one of my all-time favorite annies.

I think Marissa sounded like a great Annie, but I did not like her voice on the 30th Anniversary CD. It sounded shouty and there was very little vibrato which was disappointing.

I saw Marissa O'Donnell as Annie in 2006 in Philadelphia. I don't remember how she sang! I didn't like how she sang on the CD.

I saw her in Portland in 2005 or 2006, not sure, and she was FANTASTIC. She had this warmth that the role hadn't seen in a long time (and, imho hasn't since). Her singing was phenomenal, and I actually thought it wasn't going to be that good because I saw a video beforehand where she sounded a bit like in the CD (though not at all to that extent) and I was actually surprised at how UNLIKE that she sang.
I'm wondering if Martin Charnin wanted her to sound younger, and they thought that sounded younger? i'm not sure, but it's a pity.

She sang alot like Amanda Balon on the CD. I'm not saying it wasn't good, because I couldn't sing like that. But it sounded strained like she wasn't opening her throat properly.

Marisa had a cold during the recording of the album. It's always better to hear a musical theatre performer live and in the context of the show. I'm always amazed when I hear how quickly show recordings are thrown together. Usually the performers get one or two takes to sing the song and that's it. When you record a solo album or song, you get the luxury of doing as many times as you want and editing the takes together in the way that shows you off the best. When someone else is paying for it, you just do as your told.

I understand that there is a rush to record but she sang the song 100 times before. Also she doesn't have great vibrato.

Marisa may have been directed by Martin Charnin to sing the song a certain way, or without vibrato. Her voice has certainly developed beautifully as a teenager, so she was trained well.

I actually thought it sounded fine. I loved her voice in the videos on this site, but didn't dislike the recording at all.

A bought the cd shortly after it came out and I thought that the final mixing on it was awful. It is not the singers' fault, but whoever mixed and produced the final version. My son is a recording engineer and he could not believe the poor quality on the final cd.

I agree that Marissa sounded very different on "Maybe" then she did on the soundtrack from "Annie 2." (It was included with the 30th anniversary recording.) I thought her vocal quality was phenomonal on the second cd, but kind of childish on the first.

I just listened in on itunes, and maybe their sound is wonky, but it sounds like someone overdid the autotune to me.

I remember hearing her say, at one point, that by the time they recorded the CD her voice had changed or something and she wasn't able to sing the high notes as well... or hadn't sung them in such a long time, or something to that extent. So maybe her voice wasn't used to singing like that anymore...?
